The market had an overall weak session today. The major averages opened higher and went to solid gains. Selling came in and the major averages declined into the close. All finished low in their intraday trading ranges. The COMPQ closed down just .05% and the NDX gained .18%. The SPX lost .17%. Volume was lower across the board. Leading stocks were higher on the day. The leaders index gained 2.25%. The index closed in the upper half of its trading range on lower and below average volume. The market started off with solid gains early and it looked like the market might build on recent positive action. The gains were lost as selling came in and the major averages closed weak. There are encouraging signs of the market possibly putting in a decent countertrend rally. The market doesn’t seem to be able to get much going yet. Not holding on to early gains isn’t a good sign. Today was a pretty quiet, and that may be good after recent volatility. We are still waiting to see if the market can stage a better countertrend rally than the last one. Buying positions here is pretty risky and should be done very carefully. Jerry
